Kemi Omotosho: Leading MultiChoice Nigeria into a New Era
By Love Oyedokun
Kemi Omotosho’s appointment as the new CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria marks a significant turning point not only for the company but also for the Nigerian media landscape. As the first female CEO in the company’s history, she inherits a legacy of achievement under her predecessor, John Ugbe, while facing an increasingly complex economic and competitive environment. The transition signals the end of one era and the beginning of another amid tightening market conditions and changing consumer behaviors.
Cablenews24 reports that Omotosho – having a career built on experience and resilience, brings more than twenty years of extensive experience spanning Sub-Saharan Africa, though her career has been characterized more by steady, influential roles than headline-grabbing moments. Prior to taking the helm in Nigeria, she served as the Regional Director for Southern Africa at MultiChoice Group. In that capacity, she managed a broad portfolio across seven high-value markets in English and Portuguese-speaking regions, a role demanding a sharp focus on profit and loss, as well as agile leadership amid currency fluctuations, inflation, and evolving viewer preferences. This background firmly equipped her to steer MultiChoice Nigeria through its current challenges.
Her educational credentials provide a robust foundation for her leadership. Omotosho earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ilorin, followed by an Executive MBA from Lagos Business School. She has consistently invested in further executive education through prestigious programs at institutions like INSEAD, IESE Business School, Duke Corporate Education, and Harvard Business School. Additionally, specialized leadership training within MultiChoice and Naspers has honed her governance and decision-making skills. More recently, she completed the MultiChoice Top Leaders Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science and actively participates in leadership and mentorship initiatives such as The Boardroom Africa and MultiChoice’s Advancing Women Programme.
Known for her ability to integrate diverse teams and foster collaboration across functions, Omotosho leadership style and management is often described by colleagues as a leader who values clarity, decisiveness, and pragmatic judgment. Her guiding philosophy can be summarized as: keep what works, fix what bends, and discard what breaks. This approach reflects a focus on efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability — qualities that will be crucial in navigating the complex Nigerian media market today.
Omotosho steps into her role following John Ugbe, who began his journey with MultiChoice Nigeria in 1998 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director in 2011, before finally serving as CEO from 2018 until his recent retirement. Ugbe’s tenure was marked by substantial growth and significant innovations that expanded Nigeria’s pay TV landscape.
Under Ugbe’s leadership, MultiChoice Nigeria launched GOtv in 2011, which greatly expanded market access and audience reach. He spearheaded the creation of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013, providing a formal platform to celebrate excellence in African film and television. That same year, the company opened a new office in Abuja and introduced the DStv Explora decoder to Nigerian consumers. Initiatives such as GOtv Boxing Night, BoxOffice on DStv, and Africa Magic Showcase steadily deepened local engagement and diversified content offerings.
Beyond market expansion, Ugbe prioritized empowerment and digital transformation. Programs like Canvassers and GOtv Sabimen, launched in 2016, generated thousands of job opportunities in Nigeria. The reintroduction of Big Brother Naija in 2017 and the launch of DStv Now (later rebranded DStv Stream) aligned well with the increasing demand for digital content. His appointment as CEO coincided with the establishment of the MultiChoice Talent Factory in 2018, which supports skill development for the next generation of African media professionals.
Further milestones followed, including the debut of Showmax in Nigeria in 2019 and the construction of a dedicated Big Brother Naija studio in Lagos. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company demonstrated social responsibility by committing ₦1.2 billion towards relief efforts, encompassing awareness campaigns, financial donations, and provision of protective equipment. Ugbe also contributed to the wider media industry as Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria and launched The Nigerian Broadcasting Awards in 2023.
By the time of Ugbe’s departure, MultiChoice Nigeria had expanded to operate from 11 branches nationwide, increased GOtv coverage to 52 cities, and collected over 50 local and international awards. The content and programming linked to flagship productions such as Big Brother Naija, AMVCA, and Nigerian Idol have resulted in the creation of more than 25,000 jobs over five years, underscoring the company’s pivotal role in the creative economy.
Now, as Omotosho takes over, she inherits a company with a strong legacy but operating in a tighter, more demanding environment. The Nigerian economy is showing signs of strain, with consumers being more cautious, costs rising, and competition from global players intensifying. Her responsibilities encompass overseeing strategy, profit and loss management, cash flow, governance, and regulatory relationships, with leadership over key services including DStv, GOtv, and digital platforms.
The focus under Omotosho will emphasize affordability, simplicity, and delivering value for money, all while maintaining a customer-centric approach. This direction marks a subtle but important shift in tone, as the company aims not just to grow but to remain resilient and relevant.
Omotosho’s leadership represents a blend of steadiness and adaptability shaped by experience in volatile yet growth-oriented markets. While Uganda’s leadership was characterized by expansion, visibility, and institutional authority, Omotosho will need to balance that strong foundation with the realities of today’s media market in Nigeria, which demands agility and innovation in the face of economic pressures.
The path ahead is narrower, requiring precise judgment and nimble execution. Her success in this role will significantly influence the future of MultiChoice Nigeria and the wider broadcasting and entertainment ecosystem in the country. As the first woman to lead the company, Omotosho’s tenure will be closely watched as a potential model for leadership in a rapidly evolving African media industry.
