CAF Ban Pape Thiaw

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, following a disciplinary review of his actions during the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco. The suspension stems from Thiaw’s conduct in ordering his players to temporarily leave the field in protest of a refereeing decision late in the match.

Cablenews24 reports that CAF’s disciplinary committee determined that Thiaw’s actions constituted a breach of competition regulations. Despite Senegal ultimately returning to the pitch and securing a 1-0 victory in extra time, CAF deemed the technical bench’s behavior unacceptable and detrimental to the image of African football.

In addition to the suspension from all CAF competitions, Thiaw has also been fined. The duration of the suspension will require the Senegalese Football Federation to make interim coaching arrangements for upcoming competitive matches.

CAF emphasized its commitment to maintaining discipline and respect for match officials throughout its competitions. The governing body stated that no individual or team is exempt from the rules and that appropriate sanctions were imposed in accordance with its disciplinary code. CAF also warned that future instances of similar behavior would result in even more severe penalties.

The incident has ignited debate across the continent, highlighting ongoing concerns about officiating standards, discipline, and conduct at major African tournaments.
