By LOVE OYEDOKUN
Abuja – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has issued a strong call to members of the 38 Regular Course Association of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), urging them to remain united, inclusive, and dedicated to national service as they continue their contributions to Nigeria’s development. The COAS delivered this charge on Thursday, January 22, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the Association’s Executive Committee, led by its President, Rear Admiral Samuel Agada (rtd), to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Cablenews24 reports that the 38 Regular Course represents a significant cohort of officers who graduated from the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy, having undergone rigorous military training and academic studies to prepare them for leadership roles within the Armed Forces. These officers have served in various capacities throughout their careers, contributing to the defense and security of the nation.
During the meeting, Lieutenant General Shaibu extended his congratulations to the newly elected executives of the Association, recognizing their commitment to fostering camaraderie and collaboration among its members. He emphasized the critical importance of cohesion and inclusiveness in advancing the Association’s objectives, particularly as they relate to national development and support for serving and retired military personnel.
The COAS also provided an update on the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its operational effectiveness, deepen professionalism among its ranks, and enhance the welfare of its troops. He highlighted plans to increase the Army’s overall strength and establish additional depots across the country to better address the evolving security challenges facing Nigeria. These challenges include insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminal activity that threaten the peace and stability of various regions.
Lieutenant General Shaibu urged members of the 38 Regular Course to serve as worthy ambassadors of the Nigerian Army, leveraging their extensive experience and influence to collaborate with ministries, government agencies, and other stakeholders in tackling the multifaceted challenges facing the nation. He emphasized that their expertise and leadership skills could be invaluable in addressing issues such as poverty, unemployment, infrastructure development, and social inequality.
The COAS paid tribute to deceased members of the Association, acknowledging their exceptional character, sacrifices, and unwavering service to the nation. He described them as officers who had contributed significantly to national unity and stability, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and patriotism. Their contributions, he noted, would not be forgotten.
Earlier in the meeting, Rear Admiral Samuel Agada (rtd), President of the Association, expressed his appreciation for the continued support of the Nigerian Army, particularly in recognizing the contributions of its alumni. He also highlighted some of the challenges facing members of the Association, with a particular focus on healthcare needs and access to quality medical services.
Rear Admiral Agada appealed to the COAS for support in strengthening the Association’s financial base, enabling it to better serve its members and contribute to national development initiatives. He also encouraged serving and retired personnel of the Armed Forces to prepare early for retirement by building strong financial foundations, ensuring a comfortable and secure future for themselves and their families.
The visit of the 38 Regular Course Association’s Executive Committee to the Army Headquarters underscores the enduring bond between the Nigerian Army and its alumni. It also highlights the continued commitment of retired military personnel to contribute to the progress and development of Nigeria, even after their active service. The COAS’s charge to the Association serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, inclusion, and national service in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
