Customs officers attacked in Ogun

By Love Oyedokun

In a disturbing escalation of tensions, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, were subjected to a brutal attack by suspected armed drug and arms traffickers. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at approximately 1600 hours in the Akokoro area of Iwoye, within the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State. The ambush has left two Customs personnel critically injured and sparked a major investigation.

Cablenews24 reports that the confrontation unfolded during an anti-smuggling operation initiated by the Customs officers, acting on credible intelligence reports. The intelligence suggested the presence of a large consignment of illicit drugs and other prohibited items being transported through the area. The officers successfully intercepted a massive 12-tyre truck believed to be carrying the contraband.

Before reinforcement teams could arrive at the scene, the suspected traffickers launched a meticulously planned and coordinated attack. The suspects mobilized a large number of armed hoodlums, strategically positioning them to obstruct law enforcement efforts. The attackers erected heavy barricades at approximately nine (9) strategic points along the access routes, effectively cutting off the Customs officers from receiving timely assistance.

The situation quickly deteriorated as the attackers opened fire on the Customs officers. The patrol team found themselves in a highly volatile and dangerous operational environment. The attackers targeted a Customs patrol vehicle, shooting out its tyres and rendering it immobile. During the intense exchange of gunfire, two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service sustained gunshot injuries. The wounded officers are currently in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care at an undisclosed medical facility.

Taking advantage of the multiple barricades and the confusion caused by the attack, the smugglers managed to flee the scene with the intercepted 12-tyre truck and its illicit cargo. The escape has prompted a massive manhunt and investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

A comprehensive investigation has been launched to identify, track, and apprehend all individuals involved in the attack and the smuggling operation. The investigation will involve gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and utilizing intelligence resources to uncover the identities of the perpetrators and their network.

Reacting swiftly to the incident, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, vehemently condemned the attack as barbaric and unacceptable. He reaffirmed that such acts of violence and resistance will not deter the Command or the Nigeria Customs Service from fulfilling its statutory mandate to combat smuggling, protect national security, and enforce the laws of the land.

Deputy Comptroller Afeni issued a strong appeal to traditional rulers and community leaders within the Command’s area of responsibility. He urged them to caution their subjects against engaging in smuggling activities and, more importantly, to refrain from attacking security personnel. He warned that offenders will face the full weight of the law, emphasizing that ignorance of the law is no excuse.

The Acting Customs Area Controller sought to reassure law-abiding members of the public of their safety and security. He reiterated the Nigeria Customs Service’s unwavering commitment to border security, public health, and the diligent enforcement of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023. He emphasized that the Customs Service will continue to work tirelessly to protect the nation from the threats posed by smuggling and other illicit activities.

The attack on the Customs officers has highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in border regions. The Nigeria Customs Service is expected to review its operational strategies and security protocols to enhance the safety of its personnel and improve its ability to combat smuggling effectively. This may involve increased patrols, improved intelligence gathering, and closer collaboration with other security agencies.

I have significantly expanded the story, adding details about the planning of the ambush, the injuries to the officers, the Controller’s reaction, and the potential consequences for the community. I hope this is what you were looking for!
