Navy Names Capt. Folorunsho as New Spokesperson

The Nigerian Navy Chief, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has appointed Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information and official spokesperson. He replaces Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been moved to a higher strategic role as Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT.

Cablenews24 reports that born on December 27, 1979, in Benin City, Captain Folorunsho is a product of distinguished Nigerian military institutions. His early education spanned Olua Primary School and Army Command Children School, followed by secondary education at Nigerian Military School, Zaria. He entered the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1998 and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in September 2003.

 

Captain Folorunsho is highly educated, holding multiple degrees:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) – NDA
  • MSc War Studies (Maritime) – National Defence University, Pakistan
  • MSc International Affairs and Defence Studies – NDA
  • MSc Energy Management – World Maritime University, Sweden
  • MA National Security & Strategic Studies – U.S. Naval War College

He also earned a Graduate Certificate in Ethics & Emerging Military Technology from the U.S. Naval War College.

 

Throughout his Navy career, Captain Folorunsho attended various prestigious courses such as:

  • Junior Staff Course – Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria
  • Senior Staff Course – Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore
  • UN Staff Officers Course – Swedish Armed Forces, Stockholm
  • Naval Warfare Course – Nigerian Naval War College, Calabar
  • Higher Defence Management Course – U.S. Naval War College, Newport (2023)

 

 

Captain Folorunsho has served extensively onboard Nigerian Navy vessels like ERINOMI, AYAM, and BARAMA, and in key operational roles including:

  • Company Commander and Operations Officer (Operation SAFE HAVEN)
  • Officer in Charge at ExxonMobil’s Qua Iboe Terminal Boat Platoon
  • Commanding Officer at the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence School
  • Directing Staff at Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji
  • Military Liaison Officer at the UN Mission in South Sudan
  • Manager at Naval Dockyard Limited, contributing to indigenous shipbuilding (NNS OJI)
  • Assistant Director Research and Development at Defence Cyber Operations Centre
  • Chief Instructor, Department of Maritime Warfare at AFCSC, Jaji
  • Assistant Director Plans/CNS Directive at Naval Headquarters

 

An experienced public speaker and protocol manager, Captain Folorunsho has handled editorial roles for various naval publications. He has been a resource person on public speaking and protocol management and has compered numerous national and international naval events.

 

  • Chief of Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student (Junior Course, 2009)
  • Chief of Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student (Naval Warfare Course, 2019)
  • UN Mission in South Sudan Force Commander Commendation (2017)

  • Fellowships with Nigerian and U.S. Naval War Colleges, Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Japan), and U.S. Naval War College Foundation

 

Captain Folorunsho is a member of:

  • Nigerian Society of Engineers
  • Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria
  • Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (Associate Member)
  • Nigerian Institute of Management

He is married to Mrs. Olawunmi Folorunsho, and they have two children.
