Chioma's Grammy Look

Asaba, Nigeria – February 2, 2026 – Nigerian superstar Davido and his wife, Chioma, are facing a wave of criticism following their appearance at the 68th Grammy Awards. The controversy centers around the outfit Chioma wore to the prestigious event, with some Nigerians, including a government official, deeming it inappropriate and a misrepresentation of Nigerian culture.

Cabenews24 reports that the criticism was spearheaded by Ossai Ovie Success, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori. Known for his outspoken views on social media, Ovie Success took to his Facebook page to express his disappointment with Chioma’s choice of attire.

Ovie Success’s post quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate among Nigerians online. He insinuated that Chioma’s dress, which he described as “half-naked,” failed to adequately represent Nigerian culture and could have a negative influence on young Nigerian women who look up to her as a role model.

“I am disappointed in Chioma Davido’s dressing,” Ovie Success wrote in his Facebook post. “She shouldn’t have been half nked to the Grammy. She didn’t represent Nigerian culture well, embracing a half nked revealing Western style instead.”

He further stated, “As a role model to many Nigerian young ladies, her dressing internationally will negatively influence them. I also expected Davido to guide her better. Cultural representation matters, and it’s crucial. I am disappointed in Davido for allowing her to dress this way. I am really disappointed.”

The post was accompanied by photos of Davido and Chioma at the Grammy Awards, allowing social media users to form their own opinions on the matter.

The controversy comes at a time when Nigerian music is gaining increasing global recognition. Davido’s “With You,” featuring Omah Lay, Burna Boy’s “Love,” Ayra Starr’s “Gimme Dat” featuring Wizkid, Tyla’s “Push 2 Start,” and “Hope & Love” by Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin were all nominated for the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category at the 68th Grammy Awards. Ultimately, Tyla clinched the award, marking another milestone for African music on the world stage.

While Ovie Success’s criticism focused on cultural representation, many Nigerians have come to Davido and Chioma’s defense, arguing that Chioma has the right to express herself through her fashion choices and that her outfit should not be interpreted as a reflection of Nigerian culture as a whole.

Some have pointed out that fashion is a form of art and self-expression, and that Chioma’s dress was simply a reflection of her personal style. Others have argued that Nigeria is a diverse country with a wide range of cultural influences, and that there is no single “Nigerian culture” that can be represented by one outfit.

The debate has also raised questions about the role of public figures and their responsibility to represent their culture in a certain way. While some believe that public figures have a duty to uphold traditional values, others argue that they should be free to express themselves without fear of judgment or criticism.

As of now, Davido and Chioma have not publicly responded to the criticism. However, the controversy has undoubtedly sparked a conversation about cultural representation, fashion choices, and the expectations placed on public figures in Nigeria. The incident serves as a reminder of the complex and often conflicting values that exist within Nigerian society. It remains to be seen how this controversy will impact Davido and Chioma’s public image and their future fashion choices. The incident highlights the power of social media to amplify voices and spark debates on important cultural issues.
