Gov. Dapo Abiodun Transforming Ogun Into Economic Powerhouse

By OreOluwa Oyedokun

Ogun State is largely known as “The Gateway State”, a strategic corridor linking Lagos to Nigeria’s interior. The narrative is now shifting under Governor Dapo Abiodun. Today, Ogun State is no longer just a passageway; it is emerging as a formidable economic powerhouse, with a master plan that integrates oil exploration, deep-sea ports, aerotropolises, and human capital development. Ogun State is emerging as Nigeria’s new economic frontier.

Cablenews24 reports that in a political climate often dominated by rhetoric and short-term manoeuvring, Abiodun has cultivated a reputation for relentless focus and execution. Guided by his ISEYA agenda – Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Education, Youth Empowerment, and Agriculture – the governor has stitched together a coherent vision that is reshaping the state’s economic DNA. From securing presidential approvals for mega-projects to partnering with international bodies like the World Bank, Abiodun is turning blueprint into reality.

At the forefront of this transformation is Ogun’s entry into the oil and gas sector. President Bola Tinubu recently approved commercial drilling at Eba in the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, following confirmation of hydrocarbon deposits. While exploratory activities are federally led by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the implications for Ogun are profound.

“This is not merely about revenue,” Abiodun noted during a recent project briefing. “It is about empowerment, derivation funds, massive youth employment, and the accelerated development of our coastal communities.” Beyond potential revenue streams, the project opens avenues for bitumen extraction, reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports for infrastructure.

In addition, security has been enhanced through the establishment of a Nigerian Navy Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island, which protects both the coastline and strategic investments. The move reassures multinational oil service firms and secures a vital corridor for coastal development.

If oil is the new frontier, the resurrection of the Olokola Deep Seaport, now branded the Blue Marine Economic Zone, is Ogun’s sleeping giant awakened. The long-stalled project has regained momentum through federal collaboration and intense engagements led by Governor Abiodun.

The port, set to become operational within the next year, is designed to handle vessels with drafts exceeding 14 metres, decongest Lagos ports, and serve as a Free Trade Zone. By eliminating excessive taxes and demurrage fees, the port will attract domestic and international trade, with projections of over one million direct and indirect jobs and annual revenues exceeding $9 billion. Analysts forecast that Ogun could become one of Nigeria’s top three states by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by 2026.

The port also anchors industrial clusters, enhances logistics, and strengthens regional competitiveness in West Africa. Its proximity to the Navy Forward Base ensures both security and operational confidence for investors.

Meanwhile, inland development is booming. The Gateway International Airport at Iperu-Ilishan, with a 4-kilometre runway capable of accommodating Boeing 777s and Airbus A380S, anchors an integrated aerotropolis. This ecosystem includes cargo processing, logistics parks, residential and commercial estates, and Special Agro-Processing Zones.

These agro-processing initiatives aim to reduce post-harvest losses, increase export volumes, and generate over 25,000 jobs. By connecting air, land, and sea infrastructure, Abiodun is creating a seamless investment ecosystem that encourages manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, and agricultural expansion.

Recognising that infrastructure and industrial growth depend on reliable energy, Abiodun has leveraged recent constitutional amendments to take control of the state’s power trajectory. The Ogun State Electricity Board is supporting the commissioning of a state-owned Electricity Distribution Company. Multiple Independent Power Projects (IPPs) and mini-grids are being rolled out across the state.

“Power remains the biggest enabler of economic activities,” Abiodun emphasised during a visit by World Bank Vice President Galina Vincelette. Reliable energy is key to attracting industrial players and ensuring sustained productivity in the Gateway State.

Abiodun’s development model balances mega-projects with inclusive growth. Over ₦5 billion has been invested in women’s empowerment through the Nigeria for Women Project and the domesticated Oko’Owo Dapo scheme, benefiting over 55,000 women with financial literacy, capital access, and leadership skills.

Programs like OGSTEP and OGCARES have enhanced skills acquisition, agricultural productivity, post-pandemic recovery, and social welfare. By combining macroeconomic projects with micro-level interventions, the administration ensures that industrial gains translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.

Infrastructure extends beyond ports and airports. Abiodun’s administration has reconstructed over 20 township roads in Ijebu-Ode and upgraded hundreds of kilometres of rural roads under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP). These initiatives link farms to markets, industrial hubs to ports, and residents to economic opportunities, ensuring that Ogun’s growth is both integrated and sustainable.

From industrial estates like Agbara to the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone, from oil fields in Ogun Waterside to the aerotropolis in Iperu-Ilishan, Ogun State is rapidly shedding its role as a satellite economy. With federal approvals, strategic infrastructure, robust human capital initiatives, and a business-friendly climate endorsed by titans like Aliko Dangote, the Gateway State is staking its claim as Nigeria’s next industrial and investment powerhouse.

As Governor Abiodun aptly stated, “This is not just a story of oil, ports, and airports. It is the story of vision, planning, and execution.”

The Gateway State is no longer merely a passage to elsewhere. It is rapidly transforming into a destination, a destination for capital, for industry, for trade, and for sustainable, inclusive prosperity. The Gateway State is rising, and its most consequential chapters may still lie ahead.
