German Father Kills Family of Four Before Taking Own Life

STRULLENDORF, Germany — A quiet residential neighborhood in the Upper Franconian town of Strullendorf has been left in a state of profound shock following the discovery by police on Monday of a man who shot dead his wife and their two children and thereafter killed himself in their home in southern Germany.

The grim scene was uncovered late Friday evening. According to a joint statement released by the Bamberg Public Prosecutor’s Office and local police, the landlord of the apartment complex grew increasingly anxious after several failed attempts to contact the family. Upon receiving no response at the door, he alerted the authorities.

When police forced entry into the residence, they discovered the bodies of a 52-year-old man, his wife, and their two children—a 14-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl. All four had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Forensic teams and criminal investigators spent the weekend scouring the home for evidence. Preliminary findings suggest a calculated and violent sequence of events. Investigators believe the father, a German national, used his own weapons to execute his family before turning the firearm on himself.

A critical detail in the investigation is the origin of the weapons. Police confirmed that the 52-year-old was a legal gun owner, possessing several licensed firearms. While Germany maintains strict gun control laws, exceptions are often made for sport shooters or hunters who meet rigorous licensing requirements. Authorities are now looking into whether there were any prior red flags or psychological shifts that should have affected his permit status.

As of Monday, police have stated there is “no indication of third-party involvement,” effectively ruling out a home invasion or external attack. The motive remains the central mystery. Neighbors described the family as unremarkable and quiet, noting that the children were often seen playing in the area.

“The exact circumstances and the ‘why’ behind this incomprehensible act are the focus of our ongoing investigation,” a police spokesperson stated. Psychological experts and victim support groups have been deployed to assist neighbors and first responders who were traumatized by the scene.
