Ex-Lagos Councilor Busted for Hiding Drugs in Baby Diapers
By Love Oyedokun
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been making waves in the fight against drug trafficking, with a series of high-profile arrests and seizures in recent days. One of the most shocking discoveries was the arrest of a former two-term councillor in Lagos State, who was found to be hiding large quantities of illicit drugs in baby diapers.
Cablenews24 reports that according to Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, the agency has been working tirelessly to crack down on drug trafficking and has made several significant arrests in the past week. One of the most notable arrests was that of Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, a 45-year-old former councillor representing the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.
Olalekan was arrested on Monday, March 2, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, where a search recovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent cannabis strain, from one of the rooms. The suspect admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property during questioning.
But Olalekan’s arrest was just the tip of the iceberg. On Tuesday, March 3, NDLEA operatives intercepted 32-year-old businessman Emeka Hyginus Okwor in a vehicle from Obollo-Afor, Enugu State, to Zuba, Abuja. A search of Okwor’s luggage revealed 1,000 pills of tapentadol 250mg concealed inside baby diapers. The suspect confessed that the consignment was headed to his provision store in Guduwa village, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.
The NDLEA also made another significant arrest on the same day, when operatives intercepted Cameroonian national Mey Ali Muhamat, 36, from Maroua, with 1.550 kilograms of Colorado, a synthetic cannabis strain, hidden in a standing fan carton while travelling by commercial bus from Lagos toward Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano, and Maiduguri.
The agency’s efforts to combat drug trafficking did not stop there. On Wednesday, March 4, along the Mokwa-Jebba road in Niger State, a commercial bus from Ibadan was stopped, leading to the recovery of 500 IED components concealed in a white sack. A follow-up operation resulted in the arrest of the recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, at Pelegi in Mashegu Local Government Area.
In Yola, Adamawa State, on the same day, operatives recovered 122,000 tramadol pills and 700 grams of methamphetamine from the false bottom of a truck marked ENU 645XX carrying 2,000 cartons of local drinks. The truck was intercepted while travelling from Lagos to Yola.
The NDLEA also made several other significant arrests and seizures in the past week. In Kano on March 3, 20-year-old Muhammed Ali was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa with 11,283 tramadol pills. In Ogun State, a raid in Ogere netted Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa with 46 kilograms of skunk.
In Delta State on March 7, Joy Chukwuma, 25, and Eugene Felix, 22, were arrested in Ogwashi-Uku with 18.63 kilograms of skunk, 10.8 litres of codeine-based syrup, 4,268 tramadol pills, and swinol. In Edo State, farm operations in Egbisi forest, Uhumwonde Local Government Area, led to the arrest of Eke London, 48, and Austin Isusi, 49, with the destruction of 1,910.25 kilograms of skunk on two farms, while Alaba Adeboye, 47, was apprehended at Ikhin town, Owan East Local Government Area, with 176.50 kilograms of skunk.
The NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug trafficking are a testament to the agency’s commitment to keeping Nigeria safe from the scourge of illicit drugs. The agency’s Director, Femi Babafemi, has praised the operatives for their hard work and dedication, saying that the NDLEA will continue to work tirelessly to rid Nigeria of drug trafficking and related crimes.
Drug trafficking is a serious issue that affects not only the individuals involved but also the community at large. The NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug trafficking are crucial in preventing the spread of illicit drugs and reducing the associated social and economic problems.
The use of illicit drugs can have serious consequences, including addiction, health problems, and increased crime rates. The NDLEA’s efforts to intercept and seize large quantities of illicit drugs are helping to prevent these problems and keep communities safe.
The agency’s work is also helping to disrupt the supply chain of illicit drugs, making it more difficult for traffickers to operate. This is having a positive impact on the community, as it reduces the availability of illicit drugs and makes it more difficult for individuals to access them.
The NDLEA is playing a critical role in the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria. The agency’s operatives are working tirelessly to intercept and seize large quantities of illicit drugs, and to arrest and prosecute those involved in the trade.
The NDLEA is also working to educate the public about the dangers of drug trafficking and the importance of reporting suspicious activity. The agency’s efforts are helping to raise awareness about the issue and to prevent the spread of illicit drugs.
The NDLEA’s work is not limited to intercepting and seizing illicit drugs. The agency is also working to provide support and treatment to those affected by drug addiction. This includes providing counseling and rehabilitation services to help individuals overcome their addiction and reintegrate into society.
