SANWO-OLU ON LEGACY AND TRANSITION BILL

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made a passionate appeal to the Lagos State House of Assembly for sustained support to enable his administration complete ongoing projects and consolidate reforms before the end of its tenure.

Cablenews24 reports that the governor made the call on Wednesday at the 19th Executive–Legislative Parley held at Eko Hotels and Suites, where he stressed the importance of continued collaboration between the executive and legislative arms in delivering the THEMES+ development agenda.

Sanwo-Olu commended the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and members of the Assembly for what he described as a productive working relationship that has enabled the passage of critical laws supporting infrastructure development and fiscal reforms. “Over the course of this administration, the House has passed key legislation that gave legal backing to our most ambitious programmes-from transport reforms to fiscal instruments that supported infrastructure financing,” he said.

The governor noted that budget approvals, oversight functions, and constituency engagements by lawmakers had strengthened governance and ensured accountability across government agencies. He emphasized that his appeal for continued support was driven by responsibility, not limitation, adding that while some projects would be completed within his tenure, others would form part of the legacy for the next administration.

Sanwo-Olu assured that no major project would be abandoned, particularly in the transport sector, where several infrastructure initiatives are nearing completion. “We will complete and commission outstanding transport infrastructure projects before the end of this administration. No Lagos project of strategic importance will be left unfinished,” he said.

The governor also disclosed plans to present a Legacy and Transition Bill to the Assembly, aimed at institutionalizing key policies and ensuring continuity beyond his administration. In addition, he announced plans to convene a Citizens’ Assembly to promote inclusive governance, bringing together women, youths, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups to develop a roadmap for broader participation.

The governor further pledged to publish a comprehensive “State of Lagos Report” by the third quarter of the year, detailing the administration’s achievements, challenges, and outstanding commitments. “As we approach transition, political pressures may rise, but governance must remain our priority. We were elected to serve to the last day of our mandate, and that is what we will do,” he said.

Earlier, Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, highlighted the administration’s efforts in strengthening civic participation and social intervention programs. He cited initiatives such as the Eko Cares financial assistance scheme, which has supported thousands of vulnerable residents, and the Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme, which has improved access to primary healthcare services for underserved communities.

The parley reinforced the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, accountability, and sustained development through strong executive-legislative partnership. The event brought together stakeholders from the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government, as well as party leaders and top government officials, to promote effective collaboration, encourage inclusive and equal participation in governance, strengthen policy alignment, and address challenges affecting governance and implementation of policies.
