Lagos: Sanwo-Olu Endorses Deputy Hamzat for 2027 Succession

Ahead of the 2027 polls, Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially endorsed his deputy, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, to succeed him as the next Governor of Lagos State in 2027. The announcement, delivered on Monday at the Lagos House, Marina, follows a high-level closed-door meeting that solidified the administration’s stance on future leadership. 

Cablenews24 reports that the meeting was attended by influential power brokers, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, signaling a broad consensus among the state’s political elite regarding the path forward.

Addressing the press following the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu offered a glowing appraisal of Hamzat, noting that the deputy’s tenure over the past seven years has been defined by unwavering integrity and operational excellence.

“He is a man that knows where all the rooms in the house are,” Sanwo-Olu remarked, emphasizing the deep institutional knowledge Dr. Hamzat possesses. The Governor highlighted that their professional partnership has been built on a foundation of humility and mutual support, which has been crucial to the administration’s policy formulation and overall success.

Reflecting on the longevity of their political journey, Sanwo-Olu credited the foresight of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating:

“I use this opportunity to thank our father, our leader, Mr. President, who saw the vision 30 years ago… that long run is what is being manifested here today.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu went further to stress that Dr. Hamzat has been “worth a governor from day one.” By framing Hamzat as a leader who is “well-prepared” and “built for the job,” the Governor is seeking to reassure the electorate that the transition will be one of seamless continuity.

The endorsement is not merely a personal recommendation but a reflection of the collective confidence within the State Executive Council. Cabinet members have cited Hamzat’s extensive experience in public service and his intimate understanding of Lagos’ complex developmental priorities as the primary drivers behind their unanimous support.

This early endorsement is set to become a defining factor in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary race. As the 2027 election cycle approaches, political analysts suggest this move will have immediate consequences for party dynamics:
