Akume and the Benue Rebirth: When Statesmanship Speaks Louder Than Strife

In the annals of Nigeria’s political evolution, certain names acquire the weight of institutions. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has just added a luminous chapter to that legacy.

Cablenews24 reports that Sunday’s peace accord in Benue State was not merely a truce between warring APC factions. It was a masterclass in what Nigerian politics too often lacks: patient, principled, and paternal leadership. Akume, drawing on decades of political experience and an unrivalled reservoir of goodwill across the Middle Belt, convened a stakeholders’ meeting that will be studied for years to come.

The crisis had festered since the 2023 elections, ballooning into parallel congresses in March 2026 and factional executives that threatened to tear the party apart. Enter Akume – not with threats, but with a vision. His proposal of automatic tickets for Governor Hyacinth Alia and all elected officials was dismissed by small minds as a “political bargain.” But those who understand governance recognise it for what it is: a strategic mechanism to eliminate destructive competition and refocus energy on delivering democratic dividends.

“Akume has always been a father figure,” a party chieftain said, speaking on condition of candour. “At that meeting, he didn’t raise his voice. He simply reminded everyone that the enemy is not within the APC, but outside – waiting to exploit our division for 2027.”

President Bola Tinubu, who had given Akume a clear mandate to reconcile all party lines, is said to have personally called the SGF to congratulate him. The Middle Belt, long a political battlefield, now stands as a pillar of stability. And at its center stands George Akume – elder statesman, peacemaker, and the steady hand that guided Benue back from the edge.
