The Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) has intensified its campaign for gender equality across Africa through its #WeAreEqualInAction initiative. This was highlighted during a summit of African First Ladies, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Cablenews24 reports that several First Ladies, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, shared their experiences and achievements since the launch of the #WeAreEqual campaign one year ago. They noted that the summit is instrumental in shaping Africa’s future by addressing critical issues such as education, health, and economic empowerment.
In her remarks, Senator Oluremi Tinubu explained that Nigeria’s participation in the campaign is driven through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which focuses on five key areas: Economic Empowerment, Social Investment, Agriculture, Health, and Education. “These align with my husband’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” she said. She also announced the launch of the Young Farmers Club in Nigerian primary and secondary schools, aimed at fostering agricultural involvement among youth.

First Lady Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s proactive response to the food security emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, highlighting RHI’s “Every Home a Garden” competition, with prize winners to be announced in December 2024.
Reflecting on her past experience as a teacher, Tinubu shared her concern about school dropouts due to early pregnancies, adding, “We are working on giving these young girls a second chance at education and life.” She also pointed out ongoing collaborations, which have begun yielding positive outcomes, particularly in the areas of girl-child education and health.
A key issue discussed at the summit was the growing threat of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox), with panelists from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other global partners urging African First Ladies to lead the fight against the disease, which is rapidly becoming a global concern.
In a show of international solidarity, U.S. President Joe Biden announced the donation of 1 million doses of the Mpox vaccine to Africa, alongside a $500 million commitment to help combat the disease on the continent.
