Unity through sports: African militaries gather in Abuja for second africa military games
In a bid to strengthen ties and foster collaboration among African militaries, the second edition of the Africa Military Games commenced at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Wednesday. CableNews24 reports that, the event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” underscores the pivotal role of sports in promoting unity, discipline, and resilience across the continent’s armed forces.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the Games as an initiative to deepen camaraderie and military cooperation across the continent. He emphasized the importance of collective security efforts, noting that the continent’s security challenges require a united front.
“Our collective safety and the well-being of our people demand that we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, as one united Africa,” Tinubu stated. He also highlighted the symbolic importance of the Games, saying they represent not just athletic excellence but also the strength of partnerships binding Africa’s militaries.
“This occasion is more than a gathering of extraordinary athletes; it is an undeniable reminder of the cooperation that binds the military institutions across our continent.
“Today, we reaffirm the promise of what we can achieve when we stand together not just as neighbours, but as guardians of a continent that depends on your valour, sacrifices, and unyielding dedication,” he added
The revival of the Africa Military Games, originally initiated over two decades ago in Nairobi, Kenya, reflects a renewed commitment to fostering collaboration through sports. The President commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General Maikano Abdullahi, for their efforts in bringing the Games back to life.
General Musa, speaking at the opening ceremony, described the event as more than a sporting competition, but a celebration of the unity and shared purpose of Africa’s armed forces. He noted that the 1,625 athletes and officials participating from across the continent have a unique opportunity to build friendships and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.
Similarly, Maj. Gen. Abdullahi emphasized the broader vision of the Games, which aim to promote solidarity, friendship, and cultural exchange among African militaries. He expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s leadership for hosting the event and urged participants to compete with integrity and honor, showcasing the rich heritage and talent inherent in Africa’s armed forces.
The ceremony featured various highlights, including a callisthenics display, performances by different artists, hoisting of the OSMA and AMGA flags, an oath-taking ceremony by the athletes and officials, and the symbolic lighting of the game torch by the Vice President. Senior government officials and military leaders from across Africa graced the occasion, underscoring the importance of the event.
