The Lagos Digital House Numbering System is a comprehensive digital addressing system aimed at streamlining geographic house numbering and street naming across the state.

Cablenews24 reports that speaking during during the unveiling of the project, Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the launch of the pilot phase of Lagos Digital House Numbering System as novel.

The Nigeria Land Titling, Registration and Documentation Programme (NLTRDP), is organized by the Lagos State Office of Electronic Geographic Information System (e-GIS) and Urban Development, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Lagos Digital House Numbering System is designed to assign unique digital identities to every building in Lagos, playing a crucial role in facilitating seamless navigation for emergency services, utility workers, and residents. The pilot phase will commence next week in Ikeja.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the project would improve service delivery and overall urban management, with technology at the core of the project.

The Governor said: “Lagos digital house numbering system is a novel idea. It is about technology and that is one of the things that we are trying to achieve; using technology as a strong enabler to be able to resolve all our land issues, where from the comfort of your house, you can access and resolve land title issues.

“It is still a journey and we are not there yet. But this digital house numbering system is really more around ensuring that if you can get the address of a property, every information that is needed on that property can be accessed and people will see it.”

He commended the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda initiative to unlock the economic power of land, reiterating that electronic land documentation is essential for reducing physical interference and securing land rights.

Also speaking, the minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, announced plans to improve land titling to 50% in the next 10 years, aiming to modernize land administration and make land a viable asset. He noted that over 97% of Nigerian land lacks formal titles, limiting its economic potential. The initiative will allow states to digitize land registries, integrate geographic information systems, and adopt global best practices, as already implemented in Lagos State.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Electronic Geographic Information System (e-GIS) and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, stated that Lagos State is committed to the “Identifier” project, which includes QR codes and local government-specific color codes for easy identification. He highlighted the project’s expected improvements in security, revenue generation, and service delivery.

“House numbering and documentation has to do with ownership. So one of the byproducts of titling and documentation in land administration is also house numbering and digital addressing system. So this is a digital addressing system.

“The digital house numbering is part of technology and at the back end, we have all the information that we can share with the public. You can scan the QR code to get the information about a land, particularly bills and some other important information that we may need to know, whether the building has an approval or not. We are now in the age of technology. We need to embrace technology.”

The “Identifier” project marks a significant step towards modernizing Lagos’ infrastructure, improving the quality of life for its residents, and unlocking the economic potential of land through digital innovation.
