No less than $250m Annual Exports have been projected from the newly commissioned Leather  Hub at Matori, Mushin in Lagos State, with capacity to create over 10,000 jobs within its first three years.

Cablenews24 reports that speaking at the  Leather Hub’s commissioning,  Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Leather Hub as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic diversification, projecting it will create over 10,000 jobs and generate $250 million in annual exports within its first three years.

Sanwo-Olu declared that the $250m Annual Exports state-of-the-art facility as a “gateway to global competitiveness” for Nigeria’s leather industry and a testament to “visionary governance and purposeful partnership” between Lagos State and the Federal Government.

“This is more than bricks and steel,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “It’s a launchpad for thousands of decent jobs, particularly empowering women and youth who will make up 70% of the initial workforce.”

Beyond Bricks and Mortar: A Jobs & Empowerment Powerhouse

“This $250m Annual Exports leather hub is far more than bricks, steel, and machinery,” Sanwo-Olu emphasized. “It is a strategic launchpad for thousands of decent jobs and a cornerstone of our economic diversification strategy away from oil dependency.”

The Governor outlined ambitious targets:

  • Over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs created within the first three years.
  • 70% of these jobs reserved for women and youth, empowering key demographics.
  • Annual export earnings exceeding $250 million once the hub reaches full operational capacity.
  • Specialized training and start-up support for over 150,000 artisans to boost productivity and innovation.

“This is about transforming lives,” Sanwo-Olu stated passionately. “Beyond the impressive numbers lies a deeper promise: the promise that a young girl from a modest background can now dream bigger, knowing that the tools, the mentorship, and the global market are within her reach.”

Strategic Vision and Concrete Pledges

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the hub’s potential to reposition Lagos as West Africa’s premier leather logistics hub. To ensure its success, he outlined three key administration pledges:

  1. Protection & Growth: Implementing transparent regulation to safeguard the facility and foster its expansion.
  2. Strategic Integration: Linking the hub seamlessly to Lagos’s vibrant fashion districts and critical transport networks.
  3. Impact Measurement: Defining success not by headlines, but by “the number of households lifted above poverty through this initiative.”

Unlocking Lagosian Resilience

The Governor concluded by linking the project to Lagos’s core strength: “Our greatest asset remains the resilience of our people. By unlocking that spirit through projects like the Industrial Leather Hub, we are scripting a future where prosperity is shared, creativity is rewarded, and no one is left behind.”

He acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the hub, thanking the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her commitment to empowerment, alongside private-sector investors, technical partners, and the local Matori community.

The commissioning, performed earlier by the First Lady, marks the formal opening of a facility now central to Lagos’s and Nigeria’s ambitions for job creation, export growth, and inclusive economic development.

Beyond direct employment, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that over 150,000 artisans will receive specialized training and start-up support to boost innovation and productivity. He framed the hub’s impact as transformative: “A young girl from a modest background can now dream bigger, knowing the tools, mentorship, and market are within reach.”

He projected the hub would reposition Lagos as West Africa’s leather logistics capital and stressed that unlocking the resilience of Lagosians through such projects scripts “a future where prosperity is shared, creativity is rewarded, and no one is left behind.”
