Lagos Boosts Immunization Drive with Stakeholders’ Support
…Mobilises Councils, Religious Leaders for Wider Vaccine Coverage
Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has launched a renewed push to expand immunisation coverage across all communities, engaging local council chairmen, religious leaders, and health stakeholders to ensure no child is left unprotected.
Cablenews24 reports that at the inauguration of the State Task Force on Immunisation and Primary Health Care Services in Alausa on Tuesday, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who chairs the committee, emphasised the need for collective action to reach underserved populations.
A Call to Action
“We must ensure every child in Lagos receives life-saving vaccines,” Hamzat stated. “Religious leaders should use their platforms to educate communities, while schools must help track student vaccinations.”
He assured increased government funding for primary healthcare, stressing that stronger immunisation systems prevent disease outbreaks and reduce pressure on hospitals.
Experts Warn of Health Risks
Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi highlighted the dangers of low vaccine uptake, noting that advanced immunisation now prevents hepatitis, cervical cancer (via HPV vaccines), and even malaria.
“Our health centres must improve—better facilities, equipment, and staff—to boost public trust in vaccination,” he said.
Local Leaders Pledge Support
Dr. Ibrahim Mustapha, Permanent Secretary of the Primary Health Care Board, said the task force will enhance routine immunisation and public-private partnerships.
Hon. Sesan Olowa, speaking for council chairmen, vowed full grassroots backing: “We will mobilise communities to ensure no one misses out.”

Target: Zero Left Behind
The initiative aims to close immunisation gaps, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, with an accountability framework to track progress.
“Our goal is simple,” Mustapha concluded. “Every Lagosian, regardless of location, must access vaccines and basic healthcare.”
