The deepening internal crisis gripping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated dramatically, pushing the legacy opposition party closer to a definitive split. In a bold act of defiance and calculated retaliation, a powerful faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has summoned an emergency joint meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) for Tuesday.

Cablenews24 reports that this dramatic mobilization comes less than 48 hours after the central PDP leadership announced the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, a prominent Wike ally.

The call for the high-stakes gathering was made official via a notice signed by Senator Anyanwu himself, alongside Abdulrahman Mohammed, a leading figure within the pro-Wike camp. This move is being interpreted by political analysts as a direct challenge to the authority of the current acting National Working Committee (NWC) and its efforts to consolidate control against the influential Wike bloc.

The emergency meeting is scheduled to take place at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, signaling the faction’s intent to seize symbolic and practical ground within the party structure, effectively establishing a parallel decision-making body.

The rift within the PDP originated following the 2023 general elections, specifically over the actions of Wike and his allies (the G-5 governors) who worked against the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The subsequent fallout has seen Wike accept a ministerial role under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move the mainstream party leadership views as terminal disloyalty.

The recent suspension of Senator Anyanwu—ostensibly over anti-party activities—was intended by the mainstream leadership to send a clear message: that disciplinary action would be meted out to those cooperating with the ruling party. However, the quick, aggressive summoning of the NEC and BoT by the Wike faction demonstrates that the loyalists view the suspension as a declaration of war.

“This is no longer a disagreement; it is an open challenge to the legitimacy of the current party structure,” noted Dr. Jide Awosika, a political strategist based in Lagos. “By calling an emergency NEC and BoT meeting—the highest decision-making organs of the party—the Wike faction is signaling they believe they are the legitimate authority.”

Stakes for Tuesday’s Meeting

The outcomes of Tuesday’s gathering are unpredictable but potentially catastrophic for the PDP. Key issues expected to be discussed, or unilaterally declared by the faction, may include:

Challenging Suspensions: Reversing or nullifying the suspensions handed down by the current NWC.

Leadership Changes: Attempts to effect immediate changes to the NWC leadership structure.

Financial Control: Discussions concerning the party’s operational finances and resources.

Should the pro-Wike faction manage to convene a significant quorum of NEC and BoT members, it could lead to the formalization of two distinct, warring entities within the PDP, setting the stage for protracted legal battles over the party’s name and emblem.

As party faithful prepare for Tuesday, the internal maneuvering underscores the fragility of the PDP’s position as Nigeria’s primary opposition voice, risking fragmentation at a time when unity is paramount.
