Rivers Politics: Stay in Your Lane” – Wike Warns APC Leaders

Rivers State, Nigeria – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, to stay away from Rivers State politics.

Cablenews24 reports that Wike, a former governor of Rivers, made the statement on Monday, January 5, 2026, during a “thank you” visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area. His remarks came in response to Basiru’s recent caution to the APC’s South-South National Vice-Chairman, Victor Giadom, over comments disrespecting Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

On Sunday, Basiru had rebuked Giadom for referring to Governor Fubara as a “so-called governor” during Wike’s previous visit to Gokana LGA on December 30, 2025. Giadom had also claimed that Fubara must go through Wike to get anything done in Rivers State.

Wike dismissed Basiru’s intervention, telling Giadom:
“Tell your national secretary to leave Rivers alone, and don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted. You have to be careful of the statements you make.”

He accused outsiders of meddling in the state’s affairs due to its financial resources, warning:
“Those who are greedy because of the alleged N600 billion in Rivers should stay away. When we were struggling to support President Tinubu in 2023, nobody supported us. Now that food is ready, everyone wants to eat.”

Wike declared Rivers a “no-go area” for political opportunists, challenging them to focus on their own affairs.
“Take what you have taken and stop making unnecessary comments. We decided to support Tinubu without coercion—now, we won’t tolerate interference.”
