New Delhi, India – Leading gender justice advocates have sounded the alarm on the persistent crisis of violence against women and girls, citing shocking global statistics and calling for immediate structural reforms.

Cablenews24 reports that The urgent appeal came during the SHE & Rights (Sexual Health with Equity & Rights) session held as part of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, coinciding with International Human Rights Day (Dec 10) and Universal Health Coverage Day (Dec 12).

Dr. Pam Rajput, Emeritus Professor at Panjab University and former Chairperson of India’s High-Level Committee on Women, during the session  delivered a damning assessment, revealing shocking statistics of stagnant progress:

  • 840 million women globally have experienced violence.

  • 316 million women suffered intimate partner violence in the past year.

  • 51,000 femicides recorded worldwide.

  • 82% of women parliamentarians report psychosocial violence.

  • 73% of women journalists face online abuse.

Shobha Shukla, SHE & Rights Coordinator, declared that “annual decline in violence is just 0.2% since 2000 –and totally “UNACCEPTABLE,”, 165 nations have domestic violence laws, but only 104 enforce them comprehensively.

Experts identified key systemic failures and structural barriers as factors fueling the crisis

  1. Patriarchal norms perpetuating violence “normalization”

  2. Underfunded gender equality initiatives

  3. Inadequate legal frameworks in 48% of countries

  4. Police/judicial insensitivity to survivors

Dr. Rajput emphasized: “We demand zero tolerance in policy AND practice.”

Intersection with Public Health

  • HIV risk doubles for survivors of gender-based violence (Esther Asuquo, AGE Network Nigeria).

  • FGM increases: 230 million survivors globally, with 80 million in Asia – a 15% rise since 2016 (Dr. Huda Syyed, Sahara Sisters’ Collective).

New Global Initiatives

The All-In Initiative, recently launched, aims to:

  • Scale evidence-based solutions

  • Reduce violence by 50% in 2-3 years (proven in 15 LMICs)
