CSR-in-Action Pushes for Africa-Led Carbon Finance Solutions
By Love Ikuku-Oydokun
Lagos, Nigeria – December 11, 2025 – Africa’s potential to transform carbon emissions into economic assets took center stage at the 14th Sustainability in the Extractive Industries (SITEI) Conference, hosted virtually by CSR-in-Action Group on November 25, 2025.
Cablenews24 reports that under the theme “From Emissions to Assets: Carbon Accounting, Trading, and Offsetting in Africa’s Extractive Sector,” the conference brought together policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to explore how Africa can leverage carbon markets for sustainable growth.
Dr. Bekeme Olowola, Chief Executive of CSR-in-Action and SITEI Convener, emphasized Africa’s rising influence in the global climate economy.
“Africa is no longer a bystander—we are a key player due to our natural resources, demographic strength, and emerging carbon markets,” she said. “We must set our own standards and ensure climate finance benefits our communities.”
Femi Oye, Co-Founder of Kike AI, highlighted the vast economic potential of carbon credits, projecting that Africa could generate $6 billion annually by 2030.
“Carbon accounting is the foundation of credible carbon markets,” he noted. “For extractive industries, this is a chance to lead the green transition while creating real economic value.”
Esther Essien, Deputy Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria, outlined Nigeria’s climate goals, including a 47% emissions reduction target by 2030 and net-zero by 2060. She stressed the need for strong regulations to unlock carbon finance.
From an investment perspective, Chigozie Ejimogu of Verod Capital Management pointed to Nigeria’s untapped carbon credit potential, urging better accounting and verification systems to attract climate finance.
A major announcement at the conference was a strategic collaboration between CSR-in-Action, FuelTree Limited, SMEFunds, and Carbon Credit Network Africa (CCNA) to develop a tech-driven carbon accounting system for clean cooking projects.
Dr. Olowola explained that the initiative will convert carbon-intensive activities into investment-ready climate assets, ensuring both environmental and community benefits.
The conference reinforced CSR-in-Action’s commitment to ethical leadership and climate accountability in Africa’s extractive sector. Supported by Zenera Consulting and The Good Citizen, SITEI 2025 underscored the need for transparent, community-inclusive carbon markets as Africa steps into a larger role in the global climate economy.
