Nigerian Army Investigates Killing of 13-Year-Old in Crossfire

Akwa Ibom, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of 13-year-old Timothy Daniel, which occurred on January 1, 2026, in Ette Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Cablenews24 report that in a statement signed by Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 2 Brigade, the military urged the public to avoid speculation while the probe is ongoing.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred during a military operation in the area, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. Local sources claim that Timothy, a Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) student, was caught in the crossfire, but the army has yet to confirm these reports.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with civil society groups and youth organizations demanding:

🔹 Full transparency in the investigation.
🔹 Compensation for the bereaved family.
Timothy’s father, Mr. Godwin Daniel, described his son as a “brilliant and peaceful boy” and called for justice.
The statement reaffirmed the military’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to rules of engagement. Findings will be made public once the investigation concludes.
