Magaji CAC Registrar-General

Ishaq Hussaini Magaji, Nigeria’s Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), has sparked controversy after posting videos on social media showing his travel aboard a private jet and expressing gratitude to a private foundation. The posts have raised serious questions about ethics, disclosure, and whether a public official should accept such hospitality, especially given the sensitive regulatory role of his office.

Cablenews24 reports that the videos circulated by Magaji show him boarding and traveling on a private jet, with on-screen text thanking the Emeka Ufor Foundation. Additional footage captures airport handling services and convoy movements, while separate posts show Magaji at a traditional event alongside businessman Sir Emeka Offor. These images have stirred debate about potential conflicts of interest, raising concerns that a public official might be receiving private benefits from individuals or entities with stakes in Nigeria’s corporate regulatory system.

Soon after reports questioning Magaji’s conduct emerged, rather than addressing the allegations directly, the Registrar-General made a public announcement about representing Nigeria at the 2025 United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) Conference along with leaders of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies. This move, lacking explanation about the private jet travel, has been interpreted by critics as political signaling instead of transparency.

To date, the CAC has provided no clarification on who financed the private jet trip or whether there was any official approval for the travel. Neither the supervising Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment nor the Presidency has publicly responded. No investigation has been announced either, leaving the public and governance experts concerned about accountability.

Given the CAC’s crucial role in company registration and regulatory oversight in key sectors like oil, banking, and procurement, observers argue that strict ethical standards must apply to its leadership. The absence of a formal response at this sensitive moment risks undermining Nigeria’s broader anti-corruption commitments demonstrated at international forums.

Governance advocates emphasize that public trust depends on clear accountability and that officials must avoid both conflicts of interest and appearances of undue influence. The spectacle of senior regulators appearing with enforcement agency heads amid unresolved controversies could further harm perceptions of institutional independence.

Civil society groups and anti-corruption campaigners are demanding clear disclosure and explanations from Magaji and the CAC. They stress that if no wrongdoing occurred, prompt transparency would quell suspicions. Instead, the silence has fueled speculation and eroded confidence.

This episode has reignited calls to raise ethical standards for senior public officials and improve enforcement mechanisms to ensure accountability at the highest levels of Nigeria’s public service. It highlights ongoing challenges in balancing power, transparency, and the public interest within Nigeria’s governance landscape.
