Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian Navy has officially initiated Operation Awkward 2026, a comprehensive harbour defence exercise spearheaded by the Western Naval Command (WNC). This strategic operation serves as a crucial test of the Navy’s operational readiness, aiming to fortify Nigeria’s maritime security architecture against evolving threats and ensuring the safety of its vital coastal assets.
Cablenews24 reports that the exercise, flagged off with a ceremony onboard the imposing Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) KADA, docked in the bustling port of Apapa, Lagos, marks a significant commitment to maintaining a vigilant and prepared naval force. Operation Awkward 2026 is meticulously designed to rigorously assess the preparedness of naval personnel, evaluate the effectiveness of existing equipment, pinpoint operational vulnerabilities, and refine the strategic, tactical, technical, and procedural frameworks essential for safeguarding Nigeria’s expansive maritime domain.
Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha, the esteemed Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, underscored the significance of the operation during the launch. He stated that Operation Awkward 2026 is an integral component of the Navy’s overarching strategy to cultivate and sustain a highly professional, well-equipped, and adaptable naval force. Such a force, he emphasized, is paramount for the protection of critical maritime assets, the unwavering defense of Nigeria’s national sovereignty, and the continued stability of the nation’s economic interests intertwined with the sea.
“Operation Awkward provides a realistic and invaluable platform for evaluating the Navy’s response capabilities under simulated real-life scenarios,” Rear Admiral Mustapha explained, emphasizing the importance of practical training in maintaining peak operational efficiency. “Specifically, the exercise focuses on harbour environments, which house strategic infrastructure and key economic assets vital to our nation’s prosperity.”
The FOC further noted that the lessons gleaned from Operation Awkward 2026 would be diligently analyzed and utilized to recalibrate existing operational strategies, enhance tactical coordination between various naval units, and improve overall readiness across the entire Western Naval Command. This commitment to continuous improvement reflects the Navy’s proactive approach to addressing emerging challenges and ensuring its ability to effectively counter potential threats.
Rear Admiral Mustapha also highlighted the increasing global recognition of the Nigerian Navy’s capabilities and professionalism. He proudly mentioned the growing international interest in collaborative training exercises with the Nigerian Navy, attributing this interest to the demonstrated professionalism of its personnel and the recent prestigious global rankings that place the service among the top 22 navies worldwide. This recognition underscores the Navy’s dedication to maintaining international standards and fostering strong relationships with partner navies around the globe.

Operation Awkward 2026 is primarily focused on honing harbour defence operations within the complex network of channels, terminals, and adjoining maritime infrastructure that fall under the Western Naval Command’s area of responsibility. The exercise encompasses a series of meticulously coordinated boat operations, involving naval units from key locations including Apapa, Tarkwa Bay, and Badagry, extending as far as the crucial fairway buoy. These operations simulate various scenarios, testing the Navy’s ability to respond effectively to a range of potential threats, from piracy and smuggling to sabotage and terrorism.
In a clear directive to the participating officers and ratings, the FOC charged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and tactical proficiency throughout the duration of Operation Awkward 2026. He urged them to seize this opportunity to proactively identify and address any readiness gaps that may exist, reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Adding to the discourse, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, emphasized the crucial role of Operation Awkward 2026 in reinforcing the Navy’s unwavering commitment to continuous training and preparedness in an increasingly complex and dynamic maritime environment.
“This exercise underscores the Navy’s dedication to maintaining a state of constant readiness,” Commodore Adams-Aliu asserted. “The drills are specifically designed to rehearse established procedures, validate crucial communication channels, and reinforce the comprehensive security framework that protects our ships, vital installations, and dedicated personnel within the harbour and adjoining waters.”
He further elaborated that sustained training during periods of relative calm is absolutely critical to ensuring an effective and coordinated response during times of crisis. This proactive approach, he emphasized, is essential for preserving lives, safeguarding valuable equipment, and ensuring the successful completion of all assigned missions. Operation Awkward 2026, therefore, stands as a testament to the Nigerian Navy’s unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
