Just In:
Panic and Disruption as Fire Guts Lagos Airport
By Love Oyedokun
A pall of smoke hung heavy over the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Monday, as a devastating fire ripped through Terminal 1, plunging the bustling aviation hub into chaos. The blaze, which erupted in the early morning hours, triggered a mass evacuation of passengers and airport staff, grounding flights and causing widespread disruption to air travel both within Nigeria and internationally.
Cablenews24 reports that the first signs of trouble emerged just after 7:00 AM local time, when smoke began to billow from the departure hall of Terminal 1. Witnesses described scenes of panic as alarms blared and passengers scrambled to evacuate the building, many leaving behind luggage and personal belongings in their haste to escape the rapidly spreading flames.
“It was terrifying,” recounted Sarah Adebayo, a passenger who was waiting to board a flight to Abuja. “One minute we were sitting there, and the next, there was smoke everywhere. People started screaming and running. It was complete pandemonium.”
The source of the fire remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have originated in the check-in area. The exact cause is still unknown, but authorities are not ruling out the possibility of an electrical fault or a malfunctioning piece of equipment.
Firefighters from both the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Fire Service were swiftly dispatched to the scene, battling the blaze with water cannons and foam extinguishers. The intensity of the fire, however, presented a significant challenge, and it took several hours to bring the situation under control. Thick plumes of black smoke continued to billow from the terminal throughout the morning, visible for miles around.
“Our teams are working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the airport,” stated Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in a press briefing held near the scene. “We are doing everything we can to contain the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved.”
As of midday, the fire was largely contained, but firefighters remained on scene, dousing hotspots and conducting a thorough assessment of the damage. The extent of the damage to Terminal 1 is still being evaluated, but early indications suggest significant structural damage, as well as extensive damage to equipment, infrastructure, and passenger facilities.
FAAN officials have confirmed that all flight operations at Terminal 1 have been suspended indefinitely. International and domestic flights that were scheduled to depart from or arrive at the terminal have been either cancelled or diverted to other airports, causing significant delays and disruptions for thousands of travelers.
“We are working closely with airlines to minimize the impact on passengers,” said a FAAN spokesperson. “We understand the frustration and inconvenience this is causing, and we are doing everything we can to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for the latest updates on their flights.”
The closure of Terminal 1 has also placed a strain on other terminals at MMIA, which are now operating at near-maximum capacity to accommodate the diverted flights. Long queues and delays are being reported at check-in counters, security checkpoints, and immigration areas.
In the wake of the fire, concerns have been raised about safety standards and emergency preparedness at the airport. Some critics have pointed to previous incidents and near-misses, questioning whether adequate measures are in place to prevent and respond to such emergencies.
An investigation has been launched by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to determine the cause of the fire and to assess compliance with safety regulations at MMIA. The investigation will also examine the response of emergency services and the effectiveness of the airport’s evacuation procedures.
“We will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to determine the root cause of this incident and to identify any deficiencies in our safety protocols,” vowed a senior official from the NCAA. “We will take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”

While no casualties have been reported, several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Airport authorities have set up a help desk to assist affected passengers with rebooking flights, locating lost luggage, and providing accommodation.
The fire at MMIA Terminal 1 is a major setback for Nigeria’s aviation industry, and it is likely to have a significant economic impact, particularly on tourism and trade. The airport is a vital gateway for both domestic and international travel, and its disruption will be felt across the country and beyond.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on restoring normal operations at MMIA and ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and staff. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but authorities are determined to rebuild Terminal 1 and to restore confidence in the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
