Tinubu Intervenes: Cashless Payment System Suspended at Federal Airports
By Love Oyedokun
In a swift response to the chaos and congestion caused by the newly introduced cashless payment system at federal airports, President Bola Tinubu has directed the suspension of the policy. The decision was announced by Mr. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the President on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja.
Cablenews24 reports that the cashless payment system, which was introduced to curb corruption and enhance transparency in revenue collection, had caused severe gridlock and hardship for travelers, particularly at Lagos and Abuja airports. The system, which barred cash payments at airport toll gates, required motorists to use prepaid access cards or electronic channels. However, the implementation of the policy resulted in delays and congestion, with some passengers missing flights due to the gridlock at toll points.
According to Keyamo, the President directed an immediate return to the previous payment arrangement pending improvements. “Mr. President directed that we should suspend the present system because it creates a lot of gridlock,” Keyamo said. “He said we should go back to the status quo and then perfect the system properly.” The Minister added that the President directed that the review of the platform be carried out expeditiously, with a focus on developing an electronic system that will collect money seamlessly without causing delays.
The suspension of the cashless payment system is a welcome relief to travelers who have been experiencing difficulties and delays at the airports. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had begun implementing the cashless policy on March 1, but the development resulted in chaos and congestion. The Minister assured that consultations would continue with FAAN on the next steps, and the President’s directive is expected to bring relief to travelers and airport authorities alike.
