NPA’s Port Modernization and National Single Window Initiatives
…Poised to Unleash New Era of Trade and Economic Growth in Nigeria
By Love Oyedokun
LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria’s maritime sector, responsible for over 80% of the nation’s international trade, is undergoing a profound transformation driven by a comprehensive modernization strategy spearheaded by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho. This ambitious strategy, built upon the pillars of port infrastructure modernization, digital trade facilitation, and far-reaching institutional reform, is designed to reposition Nigeria’s seaports as competitive and efficient hubs within the dynamic global shipping ecosystem.
Cablenews24 reports that the transformation is already yielding significant results, as evidenced by the NPA’s recently released 2025 report, which revealed a historic surge in maritime activity across the nation. The report highlights substantial increases in cargo throughput, rising container traffic volumes, and a rapidly expanding export footprint, underscoring the effectiveness of the federal government’s commitment to diversifying the economy and fostering trade-led growth.
The NPA’s 2025 Operational Performance Report detailed a remarkable 24.8% surge in total cargo throughput, climbing from approximately 103.6 million metric tons in 2024 to an impressive 129.3 million metric tons in 2025. This unprecedented growth signifies a significant leap forward for Nigeria’s maritime sector, positioning the country as a more attractive and competitive player in regional and global trade networks.
Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, hailed the growth as one of the most significant annual increases in Nigeria’s maritime history. He emphasized that this milestone reinforces Nigeria’s status as a more competitive and strategically important participant in both regional and global trade markets. He attributed the outstanding performance to the transformative reforms implemented by the federal government, designed to address long-standing challenges that have historically plagued the nation’s ports.
For decades, Nigeria’s ports have struggled with a myriad of constraints, including aging infrastructure, inefficient processes, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and corruption. However, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the government is actively reversing this trend through an ambitious and comprehensive reform program championed by the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, led by Adegboyega Oyetola, and implemented in large part by the Nigerian Ports Authority under the capable management of Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho.
At the heart of this transformative reform strategy are two interconnected and mutually reinforcing initiatives:
- Comprehensive Modernization of Port Infrastructure: This encompasses significant investments in upgrading existing port facilities, expanding capacity, and incorporating state-of-the-art technology to improve operational efficiency and reduce turnaround times for vessels.
- Deployment of the National Single Window (NSW): This ambitious project involves the creation of a digital platform meticulously designed to streamline trade documentation processes, eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic delays, and enhance transparency across the entire import and export value chain.
The National Single Window (NSW) initiative is poised to revolutionize trade facilitation in Nigeria. By providing a centralized platform for all trade-related documentation and regulatory approvals, the NSW will significantly reduce the time and cost associated with importing and exporting goods, making Nigerian businesses more competitive in the global marketplace.
In preparation for the official launch of the NSW, the NPA has been diligently putting the necessary structures in place to ensure its seamless integration into port operations. Recognizing the critical role of the NPA as a key stakeholder in the NSW initiative, the agency has fully aligned its operational processes and systems with the NSW platform.

The NPA has actively participated in the NSW Committee, collaborating closely with the NSW Project Team, KPMG, and CrimsonLogic to ensure seamless integration of the Authority’s Revenue Invoice Management System (RIMS 2.0) with the overall NSW architecture. These engagements have focused on aligning current processes with the national framework, and have involved making several key strategic, operational, and technical decisions.
In line with Phase 1 of the NSW go-live plan, the NPA has actively participated in a series of technical and strategic engagements with the NSW Project Team and its implementation partners, successfully completed initial User Acceptance Testing (UAT), inaugurated a Transition Committee for the NSW, and overseen the development and delivery of all requested system training programs.
The successful implementation of the port modernization and NSW initiatives is expected to have a far-reaching impact on Nigeria’s economy, stimulating trade, attracting foreign investment, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
