Bonny, Rivers State – In a decisive move against crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, the Nigerian Navy, under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, has destroyed an illegal crude oil storage site within its Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY Area of Operations in Rivers State. The operation, a direct response to the directive issued by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, signals an intensified effort to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime environment and economic interests.

Cablenews24 reports that leveraging advanced Maritime Surveillance technology, the Nigerian Navy unit uncovered concealed dugout pits hidden beneath thick vegetation within creeks in the Opotumbi general area. This discovery underscores the sophistication employed by oil thieves in their attempts to evade detection and exploit the region’s rich resources.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence gathered, elements from FOB BONNY moved to the site and discovered four dugout pits containing an estimated 17,500 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil. The recovered products were subsequently destroyed in accordance with established operational guidelines, ensuring the elimination of the illegal storage and preventing further misuse of the stolen oil.

This operation demonstrates the Nigerian Navy’s renewed momentum in combating crude oil theft and maritime crimes, which emphasizes continuous patrols, enhanced surveillance, and robust inter-agency collaboration. Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, emphasized that the Navy is committed to protecting critical national assets and safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests in the maritime domain.
