WIMBIZ Condemns Ozoro Festival Attacks, Demands Systemic Reform

The Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ) organization has issued a strong condemnation regarding the recent reports of violent assaults against women and girls during the Ozoro festival in Delta State. Labeling the incident as a grave violation of human rights, the organization has called for immediate accountability and a reassessment of the safety standards provided for women in public and cultural spaces.

WIMBIZ Condemns Ozoro Festival Attacks

Cablenews24 reports that in a press release, WIMBIZ emphasized that these assaults are not merely isolated criminal acts but are symptomatic of deeply ingrained structural and cultural challenges facing women across Nigeria. The organization insists that public events must not be permitted to serve as environments where women’s safety is compromised.

While WIMBIZ acknowledged the government’s commitment to pursuing the perpetrators, they stressed that reactive measures alone are insufficient. To effectively combat the rising tide of gender-based violence (GBV), the organization is intensifying its advocacy for the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill.

WIMBIZ argues that the passage of this bill is a critical necessity to:

• Define Penalties: Ensure consistent and severe legal consequences for offenders.
• Shift Norms: Foster a national culture of zero tolerance toward violence against women.

The organization underscored that the responsibility to eliminate gender-based violence is a collective endeavor. WIMBIZ urged community leaders, law enforcement agencies, and the broader civil society to collaborate in creating a societal framework where women can participate in cultural, economic, and social activities without the constant threat of intimidation or abuse.

“Cultural or social settings must never become grounds for abuse,” the organization stated. “Decisive action with zero tolerance for violence must be the standard.” WIMBIZ has affirmed its commitment to monitoring the ongoing investigations into the Ozoro festival incidents to ensure that justice is served for all victims.
