Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has reaffirmed its support for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) as the agency moves to finalize new regulations on sodium content in pre-packaged foods.

Cablenews24 reports that during a recent engagement session in Lagos, CAPPA Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi praised NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, for her proactive leadership. Oluwafemi emphasized that CAPPA remains dedicated to backing NAFDAC’s “difficult but necessary” policy decisions designed to improve public health outcomes across Nigeria.

The session, organized by NAFDAC in partnership with the Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED), drew participation from international health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), and Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL).

Prof. Adeyeye highlighted the urgent need for intervention, noting that diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—such as hypertension, stroke, and cardiovascular conditions—are rising sharply in Nigeria. Dr. Jerome Mafeni of NHED further noted that these conditions are increasingly affecting younger demographics, creating a long-term strain on the nation’s health infrastructure.

The proposed regulations build upon the National Sodium Reduction Guideline launched by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in 2025. Key targets set for 2030 include:
