LAGOS, NIGERIA – [Insert Date Here, e.g., April 12, 2026] – In a significant move to foster a stronger, more collaborative relationship between law enforcement and the citizenry, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olátúnjí Disu made a high-impact working visit to Lagos State on Saturday. His visit, which included an address to members of the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents (LAGOCO) at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, was underscored by a powerful call for deeper police-public trust, professional conduct, and a paradigm shift towards community-centered policing.

Cablenews24 reports that IGP Disu’s presence in Lagos held a personal significance, as his itinerary included a visit to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) headquarters, an organization he once commanded. Reflecting on his tenure, the IGP expressed palpable delight at returning to what he described as a familiar and formative environment. He fondly recalled the robust professional rapport he cultivated with journalists during his time at the RRS, noting how the physical proximity of the RRS and the press centre facilitated an invaluable level of collaboration and mutual understanding.

“The proximity between the RRS and the press centre had, at the time, encouraged collaboration and improved understanding between both institutions,” IGP Disu stated. “This synergy, I believe, significantly supported effective public communication and our collective service delivery to the citizens of Lagos.” This personal anecdote served as a powerful preamble to his broader message about the indispensable role of open communication and trust in modern policing.

At the heart of IGP Disu’s engagement was a fervent plea for a paradigm shift in how the police interact with the public. Addressing LAGOCO members, he articulated a vision where the police are not seen as an isolated entity but as integral partners in the community’s safety and security architecture.

“Modern policing requires strong community partnership,” the IGP emphasized. “Members of the public must be seen as collaborators in maintaining safety and security, not as adversaries.” This statement marks a significant departure from a more traditional, command-and-control approach, advocating instead for a collaborative model where intelligence sharing, mutual respect, and joint problem-solving are paramount.

Furthermore, IGP Disu did not mince words when addressing the rank and file. He issued a stern charge to officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in their duties. A direct warning was issued against any conduct that could erode public confidence, with an unwavering emphasis placed on the imperative of respectful treatment of citizens at all times. This directive is crucial, as instances of perceived heavy-handedness or disrespect can severely damage the relationship between the police and the communities they serve, hindering efforts to build essential trust.

IGP Disu’s Lagos visit was comprehensive, encompassing more than just interactions with the press and his former RRS colleagues. His agenda also included critical meetings with senior police officers across the state, aimed at assessing operational readiness and reinforcing the directives on professional conduct and community engagement. Additionally, a crucial engagement with the Governor of Lagos State was part of his schedule, underscoring the importance of inter-agency cooperation and the alignment of state security policies with national objectives. His address to the personnel of the Rapid Response Squad further reinforced the expectations for effective, professional, and community-oriented policing.

Recognizing the media as a vital conduit for information and a key stakeholder in fostering public trust, IGP Disu also took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the media’s continued support. He highlighted the long-standing cordial relationship between the press and the police, acknowledging its importance in disseminating accurate information, promoting public safety campaigns, and holding both institutions accountable. This acknowledgement signals a commitment to transparency and open communication with the Fourth Estate, viewing them as partners in the pursuit of a secure society.

By returning to a familiar operational environment and directly engaging with various stakeholders, IGP Disu is not only reiterating existing mandates but is actively working to embed a culture of accountability, respect, and partnership. His emphasis on seeing citizens as collaborators rather than mere subjects of policing marks a progressive vision, one that, if fully embraced and implemented, holds the potential to significantly enhance safety and security across Lagos and, by extension, the entire nation. The journey towards deeper police-public trust is long, but IGP Disu’s visit has undoubtedly set a robust pace.

Chairman of Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents, LAGOCO, George Okojie, while welcoming the Inspector-General, expressed confidence in his leadership, saying his tenure would further strengthen the operational effectiveness and public image of the Nigeria Police Force.

Mr Okojie who describing his elevation as well-deserved, recalled Mr Disu’s tenure as RRS Commander, highlighting his accessibility, responsiveness to journalists, and concern for their welfare.
