Dangote Refinery: Aviation’s New Powerhouse
By Love Oyedokun
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has officially cemented its status as the most critical infrastructure for Nigeria’s aviation sector. According to recent disclosures from the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), the multi-billion dollar refinery currently accounts for over 95% of the Jet A1 fuel consumed nationwide.
Cablenews24 reports that n a volatile global landscape defined by supply chain instability in the Middle East and fluctuating crude oil prices, the refinery has emerged as a stabilizing force. Obiora Okonkwo, the spokesperson for the AON, went as far as to describe the refinery not merely as an industrial facility, but as a “game changer” and a literal “lifesaver” for domestic airlines that would have otherwise faced crippling shortages and operational shutdowns.
While the production capacity of the Dangote Refinery has solved the problem of physical fuel scarcity, Nigerian airlines are currently facing a different, more insidious threat: price gouging . Despite the refinery maintaining a consistent and affordable output, operators report that the price of Jet A1 has surged by an astonishing 300% since the onset of the current geopolitical tensions.
The AON points to a disturbing trend of “artificial scarcity” orchestrated by middle-men and fuel marketers. According to Okonkwo, these actors are exploiting the distribution chain to hoard supplies, thereby forcing airlines to purchase fuel at prices that bear no resemblance to the official depot rates provided by the refinery. This has led to allegations of widespread racketeering, where unscrupulous marketers capitalize on the high demand to maximize profits at the expense of both the airlines and the traveling public.
The situation has reached a boiling point, prompting high-level discussions between the AON and the Federal Government. Allen Onyema, the Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, has become a vocal critic of the current market structure.
“The truth is that marketers must be called to account,” Onyema stated following a closed-door meeting with government officials. He challenged the logic of the current pricing, noting that because the Dangote Refinery provides the cheapest fuel in the market—with many marketers sourcing directly from the facility—there is no justifiable economic reason for the 300% price hike. His call for a crackdown on market saboteurs reflects a broader industry demand for transparency and government-led intervention to curb predatory pricing.
While domestic operators struggle with local distribution issues, the Dangote Refinery is simultaneously making significant waves on the international stage. Data from the period between March and April 20 confirms that the facility exported approximately 876,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel to Europe, totaling roughly 1.1 billion litres .
Export Performance (March–April)
| Period | Volume (Metric Tonnes) |
|---|---|
| March | 456,000 |
| April (to 20th) | 420,000 |
| Total | 876,000 |
This export volume is a testament to the refinery’s operational capacity and logistical sophistication. By successfully navigating the stringent standards of the European market while simultaneously servicing nearly the entire Nigerian domestic market, the refinery is positioning Nigeria as an emerging powerhouse in the global downstream sector.

The current situation presents a clear dichotomy: a state-of-the-art refinery providing the domestic market with unprecedented energy security, contrasted with a downstream distribution network that is effectively undermining that progress.
For the Nigerian aviation sector to thrive, the AON suggests that the government must look beyond production and address the “middle-man” problem. Without strict regulatory oversight to ensure that the factory-gate price of fuel reaches the airline operators, the potential for local refining to stabilize the economy will remain shackled by market racketeering. As it stands, the Dangote Refinery has done its part; the challenge now rests with regulators to ensure that the fuel flows from the refinery to the wings of aircraft without the unnecessary, exploitative markups currently plaguing the industry.
