Army Rescues 62 Hostages in Zamfara

By Love Oyedokun

Northwest Nigeria – In a significant boost to ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry efforts, troops of the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, operating under Sector 2, have successfully neutralized two terrorists in Kebbi State and rescued 62 hostages from a notorious bandit hideout in Zamfara State.

Cablenews24 reports that the operations, conducted in close collaboration with allied security forces and local vigilantes, underscore the Nigerian Army’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks, restoring security, and protecting the lives of citizens in the volatile Northwest region.

Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division Nigerian Army, disclosed details of the successful operations in a statement released to the press.

According to Lt. Col. Osoba, troops, acting on credible intelligence reports, ambushed members of the Lakurawa Terrorists’ Group near the border between Augie Local Government Area in Kebbi State and Binji Local Government Area in Sokoto State.

The operation, executed in Kerani Village, resulted in the elimination of two terrorists. Troops also recovered two motorcycles used by the insurgents. The motorcycles were padded with thick blankets and fitted with equipment for long-range movement, including hand tire pumps, suggesting the terrorists were prepared for extended operations in the region. The two terrorists were also wearing camouflage uniforms.

In a separate and equally significant operation, troops stormed Munhaye Forest in Zamfara State, a known hideout of the notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Alti. The raid was launched following intelligence reports indicating that the bandit leader was holding a large number of captives hostage.

The operation resulted in the successful rescue of 62 kidnapped victims. The freed hostages were immediately taken into safe custody, and efforts are currently underway to reunite them with their families.

The successful operations in Kebbi and Zamfara States highlight the effectiveness of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, a joint task force established to combat banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality in the Northwest region.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA brings together various security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services, to coordinate efforts and share intelligence in the fight against insecurity. The task force also works closely with local vigilante groups, who provide valuable local knowledge and support to the security forces.

The Northwest region of Nigeria has been plagued by banditry and terrorism for several years. Armed groups, often referred to as bandits, have been responsible for widespread violence, including kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on villages. These groups operate primarily in remote areas and forests, making it difficult for security forces to track them down and neutralize them.

The security challenges in the Northwest have been exacerbated by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and a lack of access to education and other social services. These factors have created a fertile ground for recruitment by armed groups, who often exploit the grievances of marginalized communities.

Addressing the security challenges in Northwest Nigeria requires a multi-pronged approach that combines military operations with socio-economic development initiatives.

In addition to ongoing military operations to neutralize terrorists and bandits, the government must also invest in programs to address the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education. These programs should focus on providing economic opportunities for young people, improving access to education and healthcare, and strengthening local governance structures.

The successful operations in Kebbi and Zamfara States demonstrate that progress is being made in the fight against insecurity in Northwest Nigeria. However, much work remains to be done to restore lasting peace and stability to the region. The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies and local communities, remains committed to this task.
