Mobilizing the Future: Nigeria Launches Nation-Wide Youth War Against Malaria
By Love Pyedokun
LAGOS, NIGERIA — As the world commemorates World Malaria Day 2026, Nigeria has signaled a bold shift in its strategy to combat one of its most persistent public health challenges. In a landmark development, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has officially endorsed and partnered with the Geneith Health Competition (GHC) , a nationwide initiative aimed at leveraging the energy, research capabilities, and reach of Nigerian youth to drive malaria out of the country.
Cablenews24 reports thathe endorsement, conveyed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, through the Director of Public Health, Godwin Ntadom, marks a formal integration of youth-led advocacy into the national malaria control framework. The initiative is set to be implemented across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), creating a unified, country-wide network of health advocates.
This partnership is rooted in the recognition that traditional top-down approaches must be augmented by grassroots mobilization and behavioral change communication if the country is to achieve its goal of malaria elimination.
The urgency of this initiative is grounded in sobering statistics. Nigeria continues to bear an outsized portion of the global malaria burden, accounting for approximately 27% of all global cases and 31% of all malaria-related deaths .
Prince Cletus Iloabanafor, Managing Director of CEOAFRICA and the initiator of the GHC, did not mince words regarding the necessity of this intervention. “Unless Nigeria tackles malaria by carrying the youth along, eradication will remain a mirage,” he stated. He warned that without active, sustained participation from the nation’s young demographic, Nigeria risks remaining trapped in a cycle of preventable disease and economic loss.
To provide the necessary infrastructure for this campaign, Geneith Pharmaceuticals Ltd has committed a massive ₦1 billion investment to the initiative. Emmanuel Umenwa, Chairman of Geneith Pharmaceuticals, detailed the breakdown of this commitment:
- ₦400 Million: Dedicated to scholarships and cash prizes for high-performing student participants.
- ₦600 Million: Allocated for educational materials, community outreach resources, and logistical support for field activities.
“To effectively combat malaria, we must strengthen the entire health system—financing, workforce, and service delivery,” Umenwa explained. “This investment is a strategic effort to nurture a new generation of health advocates who understand that prevention is the most effective medicine.”
The GHC, powered by Coatal Forte Softgel, is designed to transform Nigerian students into “Ambassadors of War Against Malaria.” By inviting participation from both secondary and tertiary institutions, the program aims to:
- Promote Health Literacy: Equipping students with the tools to educate their own families and local communities.
- Foster Research: Challenging students to innovate and develop community-level interventions suited to their specific environments.
- Drive Behavioral Change: Using social influence to normalize the use of treated nets, environmental sanitation, and early medical intervention.
The initiative has already garnered endorsements from major student bodies across Nigeria, signaling a rare degree of unity among the youth population. However, Iloabanafor and Umenwa remain clear that this is only the beginning.
“The time has come for Nigeria to take full ownership of the fight against malaria,” Iloabanafor urged. He emphasized that the success of the GHC will depend on sustained funding, innovation, and a shift in national attitude. By reviving malaria education in schools and treating it as a shared societal responsibility rather than just a medical issue, the organizers believe that the narrative surrounding malaria in Nigeria can finally be rewritten.
Registration for the 2026 Geneith Health Competition is now open. As students across the country prepare to enter the arena of advocacy, the message is clear: the fight against malaria is no longer just a task for the Ministry of Health—it is now a mission for every young Nigerian with the ambition to build a healthier future.
