Nigeria, UK Sign Landmark Pacts

By Love Oyedokun

In a significant move to bolster cooperation between the two nations, Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed three key agreements aimed at enhancing migration management, border security, and business mobility. The agreements, which include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on Cooperation on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security, and another Statement of Intent on the expansion of business visas, were signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during his official visit to the UK.

Cablenews24 reports that the agreements mark a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK, with both countries committing to work together to establish a migration framework that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial. According to Minister Tunji-Ojo, the partnership reflects Nigeria’s commitment to building a transparent and consistent migration system that aligns with national interests and international obligations. “This partnership is a testament to our shared determination to build a migration system that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial,” he said.

The agreements also aim to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in tackling organised immigration crime and improving border security. The Statement of Intent on Cooperation on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security will enable both countries to share intelligence and best practices in combating human trafficking, smuggling, and other forms of organised crime. This cooperation is expected to yield significant results, with Minister Tunji-Ojo expressing confidence that the new framework would deliver measurable results within a year.

The expansion of business visas is also a key aspect of the agreements, with the aim of creating clear economic benefits for both nations. The UK Trade Envoy to Nigeria, Florence Eshalomi, described the agreement as a significant step toward strengthening trade ties and supporting economic growth in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy. “This agreement will create clear economic benefits for both nations and will support the growth of businesses and investment in Nigeria,” she said.

The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, welcomed the agreements, noting that Nigeria holds a special place in the UK’s bilateral relations. “We have a shared vision for the work our countries can do together, and we really appreciate this partnership,” she said. The agreements are expected to deepen cooperation between both countries in tackling organised immigration crime, improving border security, and enhancing business mobility for investors and companies operating across both markets.

The signing of these agreements marks a new chapter in the bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK, with both countries committing to work together to achieve common goals. As Minister Tunji-Ojo noted, “I want to assure you on behalf of Mr President and the great people of Nigeria that we are open to endless possibilities of growth and socio-economic development.” The agreements are expected to have a positive impact on the economies of both countries, and will help to strengthen the ties between Nigeria and the UK.
