Canal+ Acquires MultiChoice in $3 Billion Deal

French media giant Canal+ has officially acquired 100% ownership of MultiChoice Group – the parent company of popular pay-TV services DStv and GOtv – in a landmark $3 billion deal.

Cablenews24 reports that the acquisition received final approval from South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on July 23, 2025, with several binding conditions aimed at safeguarding local content production and protecting media independence within the region.

As part of the merger terms, Canal+ is required to:
*Retain MultiChoice’s headquarters in South Africa
*Support and invest in local content creators and industries
With this move, Canal+ now controls Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, which boasts over 14.5 million subscribers across 50 sub-Saharan African countries.

The media powerhouse also committed to investing 26 billion rand (approximately $1.4 billion) over the next three years in areas including:
Local content production
Sports broadcasting
Digital innovation.

Canal+ affirmed that it would maintain full operations in South Africa, emphasizing its long-term commitment to the growth of Africa’s media and entertainment sector.

This acquisition marks a major shift in Africa’s broadcasting landscape, promising expanded access to diverse, locally produced content while ushering in a new era of digital media transformation on the continent.
