NDIC Welcomes Dr. Thompson Sunday as New Leader

In a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s financial stability, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Thompson Oludare Sunday as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). His appointment, which was confirmed by the Senate on July 25, 2025, marks a new chapter for the nation’s leading deposit protection institution.

Cablenews24 reports that Dr. Sunday is a distinguished financial strategist with over 30 years of experience in banking supervision, financial sector reforms, and policy development. His career began in 1989 at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where he dedicated 24 years to banking supervision, showcasing his commitment and loyalty to the institution.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Sunday has played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s banking landscape. He chaired the committee responsible for drafting the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and contributed to significant frameworks such as the Code of Corporate Governance and the regulatory blueprint for Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs).

His expertise extends beyond Nigeria, having served on the Expert Committee for the Harmonisation of Risk-Based Supervision Frameworks within the West African Monetary Zone. From February 2023 to January 2024, he represented the CBN as an Independent External Examiner at Heritage Bank, further solidifying his reputation for regulatory excellence.

Dr. Sunday’s exemplary service has garnered numerous accolades, including a commendation from the CBN Board in 2009 for outstanding performance during critical banking reforms. He was also recognized as the Best Staff of the Banking Supervision Department in 2001.

Academically, Dr. Sunday holds a First-Class degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Ahmadu Bello University, an MBA from the same institution, and a Doctorate in Management from St. Clements University. His academic achievements earned him the Federal Government Merit Award for Academic Excellence.

As a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and a Doctoral Fellow of the Institute of Professional Financial Managers, Dr. Sunday is known for advocating sound corporate governance and financial prudence.

With his appointment, industry experts expect a renewed focus on depositor protection, financial inclusion, and risk-based supervision at the NDIC. Analysts believe his extensive regulatory background positions him well to implement global best practices and strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s banking system.
