LEKKI, NIGERIA — In a development that marks a tectonic shift in the global energy landscape, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced the successful restoration and full optimization of its primary processing hubs: the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and the Motor Spirit (MS) production block. This achievement signifies that the world’s largest single-train refinery is now operating at its full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), a feat that distinguishes it as the first refinery globally to attain such a massive operational scale in a single-train configuration.

Cablenews24 reports that this milestone follows a period of meticulous, scheduled maintenance designed to fine-tune the facility’s complex machinery. With the maintenance phase concluded, the refinery has entered a critical “Performance Test Run” phase—a 72-hour intensive evaluation conducted in close partnership with UOP, the world-renowned technology licensor. These tests are not merely routine; they are a rigorous validation of the plant’s engineering integrity, designed to prove that the facility can maintain peak efficiency while adhering to the most stringent international safety and environmental standards.

The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) serves as the “heart” of the refinery, where raw crude oil is first heated and separated into various components. Its successful optimization is the foundation upon which all other processes depend. Complementing this is the Motor Spirit (MS) Block, a sophisticated suite of units including the Naphtha Hydrotreater, the Isomerization Unit, and the Reformer Unit. Together, these components are responsible for converting low-octane naphtha into high-quality Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

David Bird, the Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, expressed profound pride in the technical teams that managed the stabilization process. “The seamless integration and robust performance of these units are a testament to the advanced engineering that defines this facility,” Bird stated. “Our teams have demonstrated exceptional precision and expertise in stabilizing both the CDU and MS Block. We are pleased to see them functioning at optimal efficiency, allowing us to validate the entire plant under real-world operating conditions.”

Bird emphasized that this performance testing phase is the final hurdle in proving the refinery’s ability to deliver consistent, world-class output. “We are confident that the refinery remains firmly on track. This milestone underscores the strength, reliability, and engineering quality that are the hallmarks of our operations.”

Flooding the Market: From 50 to 75 Million Litres

The implications for the Nigerian domestic market are immediate and substantial. During the recent high-demand festive period, the refinery was already a critical lifeline for the nation, supplying between 45 and 50 million litres of PMS daily to keep the economy moving.

However, with the CDU and MS Block now fully restored and optimized, the refinery’s ceiling has been significantly raised. Management confirmed that the facility is now positioned to comfortably deliver up to 75 million litres of PMS per day to the domestic market. This capacity far exceeds Nigeria’s current daily consumption, providing a massive buffer that could effectively end the era of fuel scarcity and long queues at filling stations.

By scaling up to this level, the Dangote Refinery is not just meeting demand; it is creating a surplus that paves the way for Nigeria to transition from a net importer of petroleum products to a dominant net exporter. This shift is expected to save the country billions of dollars in foreign exchange and stabilize the local currency by removing the pressure of fuel import financing.

While the CDU and MS Block are the stars of this week’s operational update, the refinery is not slowing down. Bird confirmed that the facility is moving into “Phase 2” of its optimization strategy. Starting next week, all remaining secondary processing units—which handle the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and other specialized petrochemicals—will begin their respective performance test runs.

This systematic approach ensures that every square inch of the multi-billion-dollar complex is synchronized. The goal is a “steady-state” operation where the refinery functions as a self-sustaining ecosystem, converting crude oil into a full spectrum of high-value products with minimal waste and maximum efficiency.

Beyond the technical jargon of “nameplate capacity” and “isomerization,” the success of the Dangote Refinery represents a broader victory for African industrialization. For decades, Nigeria—despite being a leading crude producer—was held hostage by its lack of refining capacity. The full activation of the 650,000 bpd capacity represents the breaking of those chains.

CEO David Bird reaffirmed the refinery’s commitment to the Nigerian people, thanking customers for their patience and support during the ramp-up phase. “We remain committed to producing high-quality refined products that will transform Nigeria’s energy landscape,” he said. “Our mission is to eliminate import dependence and position this nation as a global hub for petroleum products. In doing so, we are supporting industrial development, creating thousands of jobs, and driving economic diversification.”

As the 72-hour test run concludes and Phase 2 begins, the world’s eyes remain on Lekki. The Dangote Refinery is no longer just a construction project or a promise; it is now a fully functioning industrial titan, redefining the possibilities of African engineering on the global stage.
