Oluremi Tinubu Chages Governors' Wives

By Love Oyedokun

ABUJA – The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on wives of state governors to take bold and independent action in tackling social vices and economic challenges in their respective states. Speaking at the 1st quarterly meeting of Wives of State Governors for 2026, Senator Tinubu urged them to prioritize youth empowerment, women’s skills, and grassroots interventions tailored to their regions.

Cablenews24 reports that the meeting, which was held to discuss progress updates and map out 2026 programs, featured a call to action from the First Lady, who drew from her tenure as Lagos First Lady to share successful initiatives that kept children in public schools and empowered women. She noted that her past projects, such as the Spelling Bee competition and the Leadership Academy for girls, served as models for similar self-reliance drives despite national support.

Senator Tinubu praised state-specific efforts, such as Ekiti’s adire fabric hub and calls for large-scale cassava production or smoked fish processing in riverine areas, while encouraging boy child mentoring programs like Lagos’ ongoing initiative to reshape mindsets. She also emphasized the importance of child nutrition, stating that it is non-negotiable and that the country must aggressively address the issue of child malnutrition.

The meeting also featured discussions on environmental action, with the First Lady appealing to the Governors’ Wives to immediately launch state environment clubs and urging youth groups to plant trees and combat plastic waste by July 15, 2026. She also touched on the RHI National Scholarship Programme, which is set to launch in September, and the Elderly Support Scheme, which will be launched in December.

The First Lady also announced plans for a National Community Food Bank, which will be launched in April across six geopolitical zones. The food bank will supply nutritional supplements for malnourished children aged 0-6 and pregnant women, backed by a new trust fund. Additionally, she announced plans for a Person with Disability Support and Business Recapitalization Grants, which will be launched on Disability Day.

The meeting was attended by wives of state governors from across the country, who pledged their support for the initiatives and programs outlined by the First Lady. The event was seen as a significant step towards promoting state-level change and empowering women to take leadership roles in addressing social and economic challenges in their respective states.
